The city of Fredericia within its ramparts is probably Denmark’s most well-preserved overall urban structure. Moving through the recreational ramparts and arriving to the tight orthogonal interior of the central city is a very special experience. The ramparts, which historically functioned as defence against enemies, today create a clear delineation of the city center and a recreational space for the whole city. Via the dramatic ramparts an urban structure with clear spatial and consciousness transitions is created between outside, on and inside the ramparts. The recreation edge should be seen as a regional urban space that attracts both locals and visitors. The edge must support regional functions and offer varied spatial experiences and diverse functions. The overall concept of ”the ideal city” is based on the ambition of creating a space for everybody along the edge of the city: a coherent promenade that continues and reinterprets the historic ramparts. Rather than positioning itself directly on top of the historical ramparts, the new promenade is situated in the context of the historical principles of the ramparts, these being understood as the boundary of the central city. This creates a better connection between the new district and the existing city. The main recreational spaces are hereby preserved along the edge of the city. The concept creates coherence with and within the historic city, while at the same time transforms the primary challenges into primary qualities for the future city part at the water front. The main concept emphasizes Fredericia as a fortress city under development; a city that is progressing through respect and understanding of its history, without getting stuck in it. |
