The Green Plaza invited competition, 2nd prize urban design copenhagen municipality 4000 m2 2010 topotek1, niras |
Today Litauens Plaza at Vesterbro is conceived as two plazas - a sports ground and a green park. Functional it works well, because it creates space for a diverse environment and use of the square. However, the enclosing fence and the difference in level make the plaza uninviting and unsafe, in special in the dark hours. The future Litauens Plaza – The Green Plaza – should be a unique urban space in Copenhagen which every Copenhagener wish to use, experience and return to. Simultaneously the square is to be a natural centre for the local environment, an extended living room, where everyone safely can stay any time of the day. The Green Plaza is the heart of Vesterbro – a new unique and attractive urban space for everyone in Copenhagen. Based on the areas qualities, lacks and through user-involvement the proposal builds on four topics: correlation, openness, more identities and multifunctionality. On the Green Plaza nature, landscape and plants meet and unity with urbanity. The greenery reappears in the natural materials, the soft pavements as well as in the rough urban surfaces, dynamic lines of movement and flexible furniture. Together the existing rows of trees, new characteristic trees and the many different identities form a whole. From the plaza one can experience the active and calmer environment unfolding in the urban space. Self-grown nature, lawn, artificial hill, long benches and hard surfaces make the activities taking place versatile and the areas flexible for multiple uses. |
